International travel is becoming cheaper and countries are opening their doors to more and more tourists. Do the advantages of the increased tourism outweigh its disadvantages?
Answer
Travel, especially international travel is a popular leisure activity in our life. Nowadays, this kind of entertainment is getting much cheaper and many countries are opened to it. While accepting that there are benefits and drawbacks of tourism, I would argue that the positive points outweigh the negative ones.
It cannot be denied that the increased tourism brings many advantages for the local countries. Firstly, opening to international travel helps to boost local economy as it creates job opportunities for services namely accommodation, transport and entertainment. The development of economy will lead to the improvement of the living standard of local citizens. Secondly, through international travel, one can get closer and familiar to other nation’s culture, history and tradition. Moreover, international travel also introduces a new world to the local residents which can help them to catch up with the pace of life of modern society. They can learn to speak other languages and widen their mind.
On the other hand, the increase of international travel can cause some negative effects on the local countries. The main shortcoming is that tourism may put pressure on local resources. Habitat of wild animal can be destroyed as a result of the building of facilities and infrastructure. Besides, tourists may create pollution and waste and even spoilt the natural spots. Furthermore, the significant increase in price of goods, services and housing may lead to a rise in the cost of living of local people.
In conclusion, I personally believe that the advantages of increased tourism excel its own disadvantages.
